LESSONS LEARNED | Junior Years

• Start hitting balls before you become a teenager, if possible. I took up golf at 13 years old, which is late for most who want to turn professional as an adult.

• If you can, join a golf club with a good junior development program.

• Set some goals and a regular practice routine.

• Contact your provincial golf association or the RCGA, http://www.rcga.org to find out about junior development programs, including coaches.

• Play some junior golf tournaments in the United States to catch the attention of U.S. university golf coaches. Try the Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) at http://www.cjga.com for great programs and opportunities for boys and girls aged 5-12.

• Study the habits of famous golfers through the Golf Channel, books, DVDs, audio-cassettes and movies.

• Learn about mental toughness from the writings of martial artists and great golfers.

• Become very fit: develop more muscle strength to improve your hitting distance; stretch and have a quiet time routine before each game; eat well and keep rested.

• Always believe in yourself. Golf can be a frustrating game. That’s why it’s so much fun too!
