AMATEUR CAREER | The Early Years

I can’t remember being anything but an athlete. I always wanted to be active doing something. Fortunately, my parents helped me follow my dreams from one sport to another.

Wayne Gretzky was my first idol. Each sport I tried, I had someone I looked up to. I had a lot of fun. I learned about sportsmanship and teamwork. It was a great foundation for the game of golf.

Here are some of my early athletic accomplishments:

• When I was 12 years old, I beat Isiah Thomas, former star pro basketball player and General Manager, at the time, of the Toronto Raptors Basketball Team, at H.O.R.S.E.

• I was a three-time team M.V.P. (basketball) at Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School in Mississauga (sophomore, junior and senior years).

• I played rep hockey and baseball in local leagues.

• I won a number of events in local tennis matches.

• As the youngest member (15 years old) of my home club team, Trafalgar Golf & Country Club in Milton, Ontario, I helped win the OGA George S. Lyon Team Championship at Lambton Golf Course, Toronto, for the first time in the 67 years of the event. See media clip.
